Transparency International (TI) published the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) that ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption.

According to the 2023 CPI, Western Europe and the EU remains the top-scoring region, but its regional average score dropped to 65 this year. Sub-Saharan Africa maintains the lowest average at 33, with democracy and the rule of law under pressure. TI warned that Eastern Europe and Central Asia are grappling with the dysfunctional rule of law, rising authoritarianism and systemic corruption. Additionally, the CPI saw little improvement in the Middle East and North Africa, reflecting struggles with political corruption and conflict.
