Commissioners

The Board of the Commission is consisted of seven Members, the Commissioners, who are appointed by the Council of Ministers. They are selected for their experience and knowledge in a wide range of sectors and industries including contractual law; audit; IT, and law enforcement. The Board is responsible for ensuring we fulfil our statutory objectives and for setting the Commission’s overall strategic direction. The Chairman is appointed from amongst the Commissioners.

Board of Commissioners.

Christos studied law at the University of Athens. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Shipping Law from University College, London.

He has served for six years, initially as Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works and thereafter as Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus (1982-1988). He is currently a practicing lawyer in Limassol and he has for many years been the senior partner in Chrysses Demetriades & Co. LLC. He is currently a senior consultant to the firm.

Christos has been the Secretary of the International Tax Planning Association (I.T.P.A.), a member of the Offshore Institute as well as an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has acted as arbitrator in a number of disputes.

He is advising many Cypriot and international banks and financial institutions on various issues, he has been involved in flotations and listings of companies, in Cyprus and abroad, handled foreign investments in Cyprus and Cypriot investments abroad, mergers and acquisitions and complex commercial transactions. He deals extensively in tax, investment and financial matters. He appeared as expert witness before the International Court for Settlement of Investment Disputes.

He has published numerous articles in international magazines and has presented various tax and other legal issues at international conferences and seminars.

He is a member of the board of directors of public companies and he has served for more than 8 years the Vice-Chairman of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA). He is currently the Chairman of the Cyprus National Authority on Gambling and Supervision of Casinos.

Phidias Pilides started his career with PWC in London and from April 2002 to December 2011 held the position of Chairman and CEO in Cyprus, employing almost 1000 professionals. Phidias was involved extensively with the affairs of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus where he served as President for two years (1999-2001). He has been honoured by the Institute for his outstanding contribution to its development. He has also served on the Board and was the Chairman of the University of Cyprus from December 2003 until May 2008 and the first Chairman of the Board of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency for five years, until November 2011.

Phidias has served as President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry for a six-year period, that came to an end in November 2017. He is currently a member of the Public Oversight Board for the Auditing profession and Deputy Chairman of the Cyprus Gaming and Casino Oversight Commission. He was also appointed by the President of the Republic in charge of the Technical Committee for Commercial and Entrepreneurial matters in the negotiations for the settlement of the Cyprus political conflict.

He is the Honorary Consul of Mexico to Cyprus.

Andreas Christou is the founder and managing director of the law firm A. Christou & Associates LLC since March 2019. Andreas Christou graduated from the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he continued with the acquisition of a postgraduate degree, completing the program “Criminal Law of Dependencies”. He is currently a PhD candidate in Criminal Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, while also serving as a visiting lecturer in the Criminal Law Sector of the Cyprus Law Department at the University of Nicosia. His interests are found in, among others, sexual offenses, controlled substances and delinquency of minors and dependent offenders.

Dr. Pieris Chouridis is the Dean of the School of Business Administration at the European University Cyprus. He holds a BEng(Hons) in Electrical Engineering, a MSc in Strategic Management and a PhD in Knowledge Management from the University of Derby, UK. Is a multinational-awarded researcher, activities and interest involve and focus of developing best practice in Knowledge Management (KM). His research involves the development of sophistication scale, people portfolio matrix, knowledge adaptability matrix, knowledge management intelligent system, knowledge transfer model, and performance measurement. His research also investigates into the fields of Strategic Management, Project Management, Velocity Theory and Real Quality.

He worked with organizations in the automotive industry on Strategy and Quality Management issues and in the aerospace industry on Knowledge Management issues. He was also head of the Research and Strategic Planning Department, of the Cyprus Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB).

Dr. Chourides also leads the cooperation of the European University of Cyprus with the Center for Alternative Finance of the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance – CCAF) in the European Mediterranean (Euro-MED) and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

He is an Award Assessor of the EFQM excellence model (European Foundation of Quality Management) and Advisor on IIP (Investor In People) model. He is also acting as a blind referee, for Journal of Business Excellence, and Electronic journal of Knowledge Management.

With a career spanning over 25 years, Marios Pieri has established himself as a highly accomplished IT executive with a focus on healthcare information technology. As the IT Head at BOCOC Oncology Center, he has been instrumental in spearheading strategic planning, development, and implementation of innovative IT solutions that align with business objectives while ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of data. Marios has a strong track record of achieving cost reductions, enhancing system performance, and maintaining regulatory compliance within the healthcare sector.

Marios’s technical expertise is complemented by a comprehensive array of professional certifications, including Certified ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer and Certified Data Protection Officer. These credentials, along with his educational background in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University and an MSc in Advanced Information Technology from the University of Cyprus, underscore his deep understanding of IT and cybersecurity best practices.

Known for his leadership and management skills, Marios excels in fostering strong employee relations and applying strategic thinking to drive IT initiatives forward. His strengths in critical thinking, risk assessment, and team-oriented approach make him a valuable leader in the IT field. He is dedicated to leveraging his extensive experience and technical acumen to contribute to the success of any organization he joins.
